Why upgrade the 916's rear hugger to carbon fiber?
The stock 916 hugger is molded plastic. It does the job, but it carries more weight than it needs to in the worst possible place — unsprung mass hanging off the swingarm — and after nearly three decades, most originals are faded, chalky, or starting to crack at the mounting points.

- Looks: a clean twill weave under a deep clear coat suits the 916's lines in a way sun-faded plastic never will, and it ties the tail end together visually with the swingarm.
What should a quality carbon rear hugger be made from?
Two things separate aerospace-grade carbon from decorative carbon: the material and the cure.
- 100% pre-preg Toray carbon fiber. Pre-preg fabric leaves the supplier with resin already impregnated at a controlled ratio, so the finished part has consistent resin content, minimal voids, and a crisp weave. Wet-lay and resin-infused parts — the bulk of budget aftermarket carbon — are saturated by hand or under a vacuum bag, which leaves them resin-rich, heavier, and softer.
